Northwest of the manor house at Abram's Plains about one mile, but on the property of Abram's Plains, is this old slave cemetery. It was established by Col. Samuel Smith, 1729 - 1800, as a burial ground for deceased negro slaves about 1770. It was also used after the Civil War on until about 1915, when it was closed permanently.
There are about five hundred and twenty five graves that can be located, but no markers. Some in rows and others not. Big trees have grown up all over the area.
The marked graves are of "Henderson "Judge" Beasley, 1839 - 1912, Squire "Planter" Davis, 1832 - 1896, Rinder Yancey, 1858 - 1927. All were slaves.
Among the unmarked graves but known to be somewhere in there, are Dicie Beasley, Mitchell Yancey, Thomas Yancey, son of Mitchell Yancey, Jim Boyd and wife Birdie Boyd and sons Abraham Boyd and Thomas Boyd. Ned Skipwith and first and second wife, and many others including Lucy Morton Skipwith, Josh Smith, Jane Smith, Elvira ? and Vick ?.
Corner markers have been placed; a map made and will be filed in the Granville County Courthouse, Register of Deeds Office, Oxford, N.C.
I am reserving this ater(?) forever in my last will and testament. No more burials are to be there.
Signed William Pressley Davis, Abram's Plains, 1760, Granville County, N.C., November 25, 1976.
