St. Matthews Lutheran Church was established in 1838. The original church, erected in 1845, sat where the cemetery is now. Three acres of land were purchased February 21, 1845 for the sum of $10.00 from John and Anna Wilhelm. Since it was located on the Wilhelm land, St. Matthews Church was originally known as Wilhelm's Church for many years. This land joined Samuel Stoner's land, who married Margaret (Peggy) Wilhelm. They had two sons, Charles and John Stoner. John Stoner drowned crossing Dutch Second Creek and was the first grave after the new church was built about 1838.

The cemetery started as the Wilhelm Family Graveyard. Approximately 1988, the original configuration of the cemetery was changed to align the headstones into definite rows. The source for the burial information came from the following publications: St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, found in
the Rowan Public Library and St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 1838-1938, compiled by Rev. F. P. Cauble, Ph.D.
