246    UNIDENTIFIED CEMETERY SOUTH OF ST. MARY'S ROAD

Location - In NE Eno Township on a farm at 6120 St. Mary's Road (CR #1002). Private property.

      Coordinates: 36d 06m 40.5s N; 78d 59m 15.1s W Click here for Online Maps

Survey - Margaret Jones of the Orange County Department of Environment and Resource Management and Milton Forsyth visited the cemetery on 10 Mar 2010 at the invitation of the resident of the property.

Graves - Some 34 graves marked by unmarked fieldstones and/or depressions were identified in a wooded area. The graves were up a slight slope in several lines, with most were in one line almost 200 ft long. There are probably more graves that were not identified because of fallen limbs and leaves. An example of a fieldstone marker is here.

Comments - The cemetery is located on Lochill Farm and is adjacent to an old road identified as the road to the site of the 18th century Synnot's Tavern. The situation suggests this was a cemetery for African-American slaves and possibly some of their descendants. More information about the area may be found at http://www.tradingpath.org.
