204    TURRENTINE FAMILY CEMETERY - BLACK AND WHITE (CA. 1784)

      Location - In east central Little River Township almost on the Durham County line, on the north side of Hopkins Road (SR #1537), which turns off Poole Road (SR #1536). The cemetery's two brick pillars are visible.

      This cemetery holds both black and white graves in two sections.
      The white section, designated Section I, is on the west side. The black section, designated Section II, is on the east side.

      Comment - At the entrance to this cemetery are two brick pillars. The right pillar bears the following inscription: 'Turrentine - Every family in America traces his ancestry to this farm.' The left pillar bears the following inscription: 'Turrentine - This is The family Cemetery of Samuel and Alexander, Turrentine brothers, who came from Ireland in 1745.'       Graves, Marked (Sec. I) - There were 10 marked graves in Section I (the white section).

      Graves, Marked (Sec. II) - There were 21 marked graves in Section II (the black section).

      Graves, Unmarked (Sec. I) - There were as many as 45, possibly more, unmarked graves in this section.

      Graves, Unmarked (Sec. II) - Alonzo B. Coleman, Sr. says the old Turrentine Cemetery was indian springs area, a large Indian settlement. He believes over 300 slaves were buried there.
