Survey - This cemetery was surveyed by Milton Forsyth on 26 March 2004 with the assistance of Mr. Jerry Whortan, Executive Director of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA. We were notified of the existence of this cemetery by Ms. Tammy Hicks of the Orange County Central Land Records and GIS Office. Photographs by Milton Forsyth in March 2004.
Graves, Marked - No obvious marked graves were seen from outside the fence. What appeared to be some fieldstone markers were noted, but no pattern was discernable.
Graves, Unmarked - The number of graves in this cemetery is not known, but at least three burials are probable.
Status - Mr. J. Leon Peace, the last family member to own property here, sold his residence lot and moved away in November 2003. He had resided for some years next door to property he sold to the YMCA where the YMCA building is now located. The cemetery was part of the YMCA land sale, but has now been identified on the county geographical survey. The family recently had the cemetery enclosed by a substantial six-foot high rectangular iron fence, approximately 40 feet E-W and 90 feet N-S, with a gate on the south end secured by a padlock. The area is generally covered with low green vegetation, some bulbs, and has several large trees. On one of the several big boulders in the north end of the cemetery is a large bronze plaque with the following inscription:
'Cemetery of Mildred D. and William H. Peace and their heirs. Dedicated April 22, 1885. Near Chapel Hill - County of Orange, N.C. Isaiah 28:16 ... A Stone'
[From the Holy Bible, King James Version: 'Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: He that believeth shall not make haste.']
