Example: "Smith, Roger" (yes, use the quotes)
082 CRESMONT MEMORIAL PARK (CA. 1907)
Location - In Hillsborough township at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hwy US 70 Bypass and Hwy 86 at the northern boundary of Hillsborough. The cemetery is also referred to as "Crestmont." (Note: the cemetery was incorrectly labeled "Mars Hill Cemetery" on a USGS map.)
Coordinates: 36d 05m 13.0s N; 79d 06m 06.0s W Click here for Online Maps
Survey - This cemetery was surveyed on November 13, 1973. Milton Forsyth visited the cemetery on February 16, 2007 and provided photographs of gravestones contemporary with the 1970s survey. PIN: 9865-90-8634.
Graves [1973] - Most of the approximately 246 graves are identified only by metal funeral markers and few of the earlier ones are now readable. The following list of 176 names includes 56 starred(*) entries taken either from the 1937 Survey or supplied by Mr. Clyde W. Whitted, Sr., of Hillsborough. Some 70 graves remain unidentified. The earliest marked grave appears to be that of Annie Webb Morrow (d. 1907).
Description [1973] - This unfenced cemetery of about two acres is in the care of owner-trustee Ransom Whitted, who inherited the corner property. The area is not regularly maintained. The rear or northern portion of the cemetery is covered with undergrowth and is criss-crossed by paths and tracks that have damaged graves. Vandals have toppled several stones. The southern portion bordering Hwy. 70 is occasionally mowed, and a brick-edged display sign: "Cresmont Memorial Park" has been placed there.
Comments [2007] - A 1937 listing for the State Historical Records Survey had incorrectly combined into a list identified as "Hillsboro Cemetery - Colored" burials from several cemeteries. This list was the object of considerable study by the 1973 survey team. They were assisted by Mr. Earnest Price and Mr. Clyde W. Whitted, Sr. in an effort to place the burials in the correct cemetery. In the end, they were able to place all burials except 8, which were listed for separate entry.
In February 2007 Milton Forsyth discovered while reviewing the original survey records that in the 1980s the typists had entered into the Cresmont database only 52 names from the draft burial list of 176 names. This led him to also investigate the burials listed under the other cemeteries where entries had been the subject of the 1973 study of the 1937 list: #084 (Maplewood Cemetery), #227 (Hillsboro Cemetery - Black [Old]) and #228 (Unlocated Graves in Hillsborough - 1937 Survey).
Unfortunately, the typists did not use the correct drafts when preparing burial lists for these cemeteries either. Milton corrected the lists so they are now consistent with the intentions of the 1970s survey team. Some names were added. On the revised 2007 Cresmont listing, where the source is not from the readings of gravestones and markers in 1973 (or later) it is indicated as coming from the 1937 list or from Mr. Clyde W. Whitted, Sr., or in several instances as "undetermined." The source identified below as "OCDR" is Orange County Death Records.
