The old Durham County Home and prison farm was located in what was then a rural part of Durham County, north of Durham City and out Roxboro Road. The County Home, or popularly called the "poor house", was in operation before 1881. It was still in operation in the late 1920s. At some point in time after 1945, the County Home was shut down and the land became available for other purposes.
In October 1976, the new Durham General Hospital was completed on the property and opened for business. All the patients and staff from the older Watts Hospital (whites) and Lincoln Hospital (blacks) were transferred to the new Durham General Hospital on a Sunday, and both the older hospitals were closed.
It is not known at this time what became of the County Home Cemetery, which had many recorded burials. This list is taken from death certificates and other sources.
