Proposed in 1908 by the North Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy as a home for the widows and daughters of Confederate veterans, the home was chartered in 1913 by the state legislature and opened in 1915. The home was closed in 1981 and demolished shortly afterwards; the chapel remained standing a little longer but was finally demolished in the late 1980s to make room for parking for Terry Sanford High School.
