Historical or other special significance of cemetery,
Reported to be gravesite of Sarah Scurlock, possibly wife of Miles (or Mial) Scurlock. According to newspaper clipping, she died in Chatham in 1801. Title trail does not suggest early Scurlock ownership of the land, however. After 1879, the parcel was owned by Black Scurlocks, whose descendants hold the property today.

      Newspaper clipping.

Title trail in record created by Sy Robbins.

Plat created for the easement project.

Plat of the three grave cemetery.

      Other information:
Cemetery was reported by J. W. Brooks, who indicated that there are three graves. By tradition one grave said to be that of Sarah Scurlock, the wife of Miles Scurlock, Jr., who was a survivor of the Alamo, and returned to NC with several others. The other 2 were child niece and nephew. Research suggests that Miles Scurlock, Jr. died at the Alamo, but the wife of Miles Scurlock Sr. was named Sarah. So identities of those buried are unknown. The site was documented by Richard Bullock, PLS, who was hired to survey a driveway easement.

Last canvassed by: Jane Pyle, J&B Wiggins. Date: 18 Feb 2007; Antonio Austin, 2018. Richard Bullock, J W Brooks on 01 May 2022.
