Referred to as Piney Grove Cemetery on Plat 1-6, October 1925. Purchased by Thomas A. Thompson and C. B. Boswich, on 11 July 1925, from R. J. and Nettie Johnson and from V. R. and Nellie Johnson (Deed GK-281). On 13 April 1926, Chatham County bought ten lots, each 15 feet by 25 feet, of a total of 10 lots (Deed GO-369). Since the compiler found no record of transfer of other lots, he believes Chatham County is responsible for the entire tract of 30 lots.
Plat 90-17, Revision 2 dated 22 December 1989, for adjacent property, refers to "approximately 47 gravesites counted in area from woods line to property line near fence." On 2 March 1995, Will M. Heiser recorded one marker with legible inscriptions (for Robert Alston), one marker with illegible markings, numerous field stones, and about 35 sunken grave sites.
A Register of the Chatham County Home, on file in the Museum of the Chatham County Historical Association, records the burials of 8 persons in the County Home Cemetery. Some are white, some are colored.
