140 LUTTERLOH, HENRY LEWIS [D53.1]
Location - Hadley Township. The address is 174 Clear Springs Court, Pittsboro NC 27312. Lot 16 Laurel Ridge subdivision.
Coordinates: 35d 48m 18.0s N; 79d 12m 22.0s W Click here for Online Maps
The cemetery has two parts. One has a collapsed wall that was approximately 4' high with 4 graves -- two with original inscribed markers from the 1700s -- very rare for Chatham County. An adjacent extension with an intermittent lower wall has 3 graves with evident sunken areas. The two parts were documented by an archaeologist in 2008 in a report for the developer, but the smaller section has been all but erased by maintenance activities since then. The wall of the smaller plot has been completely removed, and the sunken areas are no longer visible. When the damage was discovered in 2024, CCHA requested that the developer restore the wall around the extension to protect the now unmarked graves from further degradation, but no response to this request has been forthcoming.
The area east of the walled cemetery is covered with myrtle (periwinkle), as is another area on lot 16.
The Lutterloh family did enslave people, and in a 2009 letter to the developer, as well as in subsequent correspondence, we have requested that the area around the family cemetery be examined for the possible presence of additional graves. As of 2024, this had not been done.

According to Deed T/259, 8 June 1814 which divides the estate of Elizabeth Lutterloh, this parcel went to son Lewis, with one acre reserved for family graveyard. Deed Y/187, Feb 1823, Lewis sells to Nathaniel Brewer and excepts from the sale 1 acre family graveyard where --his mother and father are buried. --
