On 21 Feb 1998, Audrey Heiser recorded 192 grave markers and reported 47 unmarked graves or illegible markers. In 1934, the County Home Register reported Lucy Jean Williams buried here. Between March and August 2017, Paul Mitchell, Mark Sonnentag and Glenn Lazarus inventoried, updated and photographed the cemetery. Numerous errors from the earlier inventory were identified and corrected. View of the church sign.
Owner: Trustees of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Legal Description: Deed KU-255, 12 Sep 1951, 1.25 acre from W. J. and Pauline B. Cheek; Deed 391-748, 4 Dec 1975, from Walter L. and Dottie B. Burgess. Topo Quadrant: Farrington. Church owned: Yes. Denomination: Baptist. Used: Yes. Number of graves: 394. Number of unmarked graves: 44. African-American: Yes. Unrestricted access: Yes. Well maintained: Yes. Enclosed: No. Markers: Yes. Markers with inscriptions: Yes. Number of readable markers: 373. Last burial: 2017. First burial: 1900. Last canvassed by: Audrey Heiser. Date: 21 Feb 1998. Paul Mitchell, Mark Sonnentag, Glenn Lazarus. Date: March-August 2017.
The cemetery is divided into three geographical sections: -- The main section is located to the east of the curving paved access road and consists of north and south sections crossing the curving road. The row numbers are aligned. New grave sites in this section have NO letter designate behind the row number in our inventory.
-- A second section is to the west and row numbers are NOT aligned with those in the third section which is to the north west of the main cemetery. Both the western and northwestern sections are west of the curving paved access road. Further, the west and northwest sections are separated from one another by a diagonal drainage ditch that runs from southwest to northeast. In the revised inventory, new graves in the western section have row numbers followed by a "W"; and new graves in the northwestern section have row numbers followed by a "NW".
Number of graves located: 394 Number of graves identified: 360 Last burial: 2017 Fourteen graves previously identified could no longer be located. Many of the newer graves are marked solely with metal funeral markers. Unfortunately, over time many of these markers have become, or will become damaged, or will disappear entirely; thus, this survey may be especially helpful in locating one of those grave sites.
Two graves have special potential historical significance: -- Rev. E.H. Cole (b. 2 Apr 1827 - d. 27 Apr 1900). "One of the founders of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Association." See pp. 331-332 in Chatham County 1771-1971. (This marker was not identified in the previous inventory.) Location row 4.
-- Tempie Durham (b. 1835 - d. 11 Feb 1938"} "103 years old." During the Great Depression (1930s), The Federal Writers' Project was created to provide work for jobless writers and researchers. One specific goal was to interview ex-slaves wherever they might be found. Tempie Herndon Durham was one of those selected and her story was recorded for posterity. The written account of her interview was placed in the Library of Congress. Her story can be accessed from the website of the Chatham County Historical Association: http://chathamhistory.org/pdfs/ChathamCountySlaveNarratives.pdf (This marker was not identified in the previous inventory.)
