Overgrown and not easy to identify: Yes. Enclosed: No. Markers: No. Markers damaged: Yes. Listed: Yes. Gravesites of Chatham County. Miscellaneous information: Originally reported in 1989 by Gerald Oldham and described as having 8 graves with no markers, not enclosed, overgrown and not easily identifiable and on the property of "Scott" English (parcel 3087). There have been several efforts to locate the graves since Oldham's report. The property has been disturbed by road construction on the east side and a power easement on the north boundary. The land is rocky and overgrown. Bev and Jim Wiggins were accompanied by property owner Margery Gates and neighbor George Campbell on 31 May 2015. The graves could not be located on parcel 3087 at that time. In April 2024, Margery Gates contacted Beverly Wiggins to say that she believed she might have located the graves on her property. She had noticed indentations behind a shed where building debris had been deposited and had had the area cleared of debris and leaves. The Wiggins revisited the site with Ms. Gates in April 2024. Because the area had been disturbed, no definite identification of the cemetery could be made, but this area should be examined by professionals if any additional disturbance is contemplated.
The parcel appears to have been owned at one time by Alexander Merritt Lloyd and wife Ella Pritchard Lloyd, but both are buried in Lystra Baptist Church, so the reason for Oldham's attachment of the Lloyd name to the site is unclear. Deeds BW-63 and BW/64 suggest that the Pritchards and Lloyds owned property in this vicinity. A more extensive title trail might provide additional information.
