117    WILLIS, ANGELINE FAMILY

Location - off Lilly Belle Lane west of 256 Lilly Belle Lane.


Located on Lilly Belle Lane, next to the shore. From the Harkers Island Bridge, proceed about 0.9 mile east on Island Road (SR 1335) and turn left (south) on Lilly Bell Lane. The cemetery is in a wooded area west of the house at 456 Lilly Belle Lane, about 0.1 mile from the intersection with Island Road. According to Margaret Ann Lewis Rose, it is actually an assemblage of several small cemeteries.

18 graves are in a fenced in area known as the Lewis Cemetery, located at the front center (north boundary) of the cemetery.

Note 1 - According to Margaret Rose, bones presumed to be those of Isaac and Angeline Willis as well as their children Martha Ann and Dora were moved from the eroded shore of Back Sound and placed in a single grave.

Note 2 - The graves of Elmer Lee Guthrie and the other four members of his family (Nannie, Samuel, Paulette, and William Dave) lie in a 30-ft square area at the northeast side of the cemetery. In 2006, the area was roped off from the remainder of the cemetery.

Note 3 - The graves of Joseph F. Willis and his family are in a small cemetery that straddles the east property line.

Note 4 - The graves starting with Martin Willis through the empty vault were contributed by Margaret Rose and are in the wooded (in 2006) area between the cemetery and Back Sound.
