WHERE THE CEMETERY DATA WAS ACQUIRED

Introduction to how the cemetery data was gathered

While serving as president of the Warren County Historical Society in 1980, Quay Hawks Robinson, at the request of the North Carolina Division of Archives and History, initiated the recording of existing and abandoned cemeteries in Warren County. Quay so graciously asked me to join in this effort.

Knowing that this would become a monumental project, we engaged the help of Russell Eugene Sadler. Russell's love of being outdoors and his interest in the county history made him a very willing participant. Through his enthusiasm, his friends, James W. Clark, Sr., and Virgil Dillard, discovered more abandoned cemeteries. The search continued with the helpful assistance of Mae Currie Gums and Patricia Dishman Baker. Cynthia Haithcock typed the original notes and added greatly to this effort by recording additional cemeteries during the early part of the project. Other information was provided from public records, family members, and many other sources. This work includes the Warren County WPA (Works Progress Administration) surveys done in the 1930s and 1940s, and also a combination of other earlier transcriptions that were discovered in various locations. Several members of the Warren County Heritage book committee volunteered to continue in the recording of Warren County cemeteries. Dr. James William Clark, Jr., also was helpful in providing directions and photographs of many abandoned cemeteries. The tireless work of the committee members and all who assisted with this project helped to make it a success.

The earliest engraved stones have dates in the late 1700s. The names, dates, and epitaphs were transcribed as found, but for a consistent format the dates were typed with month, day, and year. Among the types of tombstones found were upright stones, flat slabs, soapstone, granite, and marble. There were also tombstones with special designs or photographs and even field rocks, wooden crosses, and funeral home markers. The tombstones as well as the locations were in various states of condition. While recording cemeteries, the surveyors faced adverse weather conditions, pesky insects, underbrush, and wooded areas. However, not once did anyone encounter a snake!

The old abandoned cemeteries or graveyards are being destroyed, both by nature and by man. The laws of North Carolina forbid the desecration of any cemetery no matter how large or small. However, in many cases we discovered deliberate destruction by man during our research.

The history of Warren County is told by our ancestors, both through their lives and through their deaths. The resting place of these family members must be recorded and preserved for our future generations. With the emergence of the Internet, more people are investigating their family history and these wonderful old cemeteries are, or will become, part of their research.

Allen Dew, a computer professional, spent many hours preparing the database program that presents the information in a readily accessible manner. Allen coordinated the acquisition of the material and performed certain manual editing tasks necessary to make the material easier to use. A capability exists to add additional cemeteries and graves to the database in the future. Allen Dew has and continues to maintain the cemetery database. He may be reached at: Cemetery Census or by mail at Cemetery Census, 3230 Walters Rd, Creedmoor, NC 27522-8641

Cemetery Census has begun adding pictures of grave markers and cemeteries to the database. The pictures display a graphic PHOTO before each name listed. The graphic PHOTO may be clicked to show a large, high resolution, picture.
