Mount Hope Cemetery is owned by the city of Raleigh, and is administered by Raleigh Parks and Recreation Dept. Within this department the Cemetery Division operates and maintains Mount Hope Cemetery as well other cemeteries located on park properties. Mount Hope is a large and very beautiful cemetery, carefully maintained. It has been in existence since 1872 when the secton of Raleigh City Cemetery that was designated for African-Americans was declared full by the city fathers and Mount Hope was created. It contains 34.3 acres (Wake Co. R.E. Data). Burial plots are available.

From Saunders Street: Turn east on to Prospect Avenue to access the cemetery. There are two entrances; one on Prospect Avenue by the office and the main gate on Fayetteville Street.

The cemetery is very large and the headstones are in no particular order. The names assigned to the sections of the cemetery are informal, that is, the workers at the cemetery use these names for their own convenience in designating different sections of this big cemetery. There are no formally designated sections. Click here to view several pictures of the cemetery.

Records dating from 1937 were made available through the generosity of Mr. Wayne Schindler, City of Raleigh Parks Superintendent and Mr. Danny Morgan, Park Operations Supervisor, Cemetery Division. Records prior to 1937 were destroyed in a fire. No birth dates or death dates are recorded, names of the deceased and their burial dates are given. Plot locations are noted.
Additional burials provided from the extensive research of Shirley Olson. Grave marker photos by: William Price.

NOTE: Some death dates are actually burial dates. The cemetery office address is:
