108    MACEDONIA CHURCH

Location - 2500 Mid Pines Rd., Swift Creek Twp. From Hwy. I-40 on the south side of Raleigh take the Gorman Street (SR 1571) Exit # 295. Turn south at the stop sign and come to Tryon Rd. (SR 1009), about 1/4 mile. At the traffic light turn left (east) on Tryon and go 3/10 mile to Mid Pines Rd. (SR 1372) and turn right. Go 1/10 mile to the cemetery on the right side of the road. Drive in and park.

There was a church at this location years back, according to Ms. Mary Champion, 80 years of age, who lives down the road and has family buried at the cemetery, but no trace of a church exists currently. There appears to be sufficent space for additional burials. The cemetery has many unmarked graves, some of which have rough stones indicating burials, some have faded funeral home markers, unreadable. There is a whole section on the front left that is dotted with short rough stone
markers that are obviously grave markers, but no indentification. A pretty little statue on the front right has no identifying marks. The graves are scattered, with family plots in various locations. Honeysuckle scents the air and large trees shade the tombstones.

Archibald Powell married Arrebella Bobbitt on April 11, 1830 in Franklin County, North Carolina.
Arabella is the daughter of John Bobbitt and Margaret Rush - sister to Margaret Bobbitt who married John Brummitt.
In the 1860 census there is a listing for a Rufus Powers (Powell) and D. E. Powers (Powell). Rufus is 10 years of age, D. E. is 22 years of age.
Durell E. Powell, son of Archibald Powell, formerly a resident of Granville County, North Carolina died on the 17th day of April, 1863. Durell was in the 26th year of his age. According to the information found in the Weekly Standard, Raleigh, North Carolina on July 15, 1863 - Durell's remains were laid to rest at Macedonia Church, four miles from Raleigh.
