093    JONES FAMILY

Location - from Cary, take Walnut St. to the intersection of Tryon Rd. and Holly Springs Rd. Walnut St. ends here and Holly Springs Rd. begins. Stay on Holly Springs Rd. until it intersects with Penney Rd., turn right, and keep a sharp look out! On your right, directly across from the first mail box on your left sits a little fenced cemetery, barely visible until autumn, as it is in a heavily wooded area.

Surveyed by Shirley Olson in October 22, 2000.

There is a tiny place to park, easily missed. A natural wood fence with a gate surrounds the monuments. It is well kept.

There have been members of the Jones families in Wake County since 1749 and their history is entwined with Wake County's. For those with an interest in the Jones families I recommend "Around and About Cary", by Thomas Byrd, illustrated by Jerry Miller, for a brief but impressive introduction to the Jones history, complete with sketches and family tree. This is only one of several Jones burial sites.

There are 2 unmarked graves additionally, stones are gone or crumbled to pieces.

  1. Jones, Barnabas   (b. 16 Sep 1819 - d. 23 Nov 1906)
      • "Father". footstone: BJ
  2. Jones, Bernard L.   (b. 19 Oct 1863 - d. 5 Sep 1884)
      • This stone appears very worn and is hard to read. Across the curved top is inscribed "Here lies our beloved son and pioneer". There is a considerable message across the lower part of the monument that is unreadable. There is a footstone BLJ.
  3. Jones, Carolina Augusta   (b. 6 Apr 1846 - d. 3 May 1938)
  4. Jones, Martha Hellen   (b. 2 Jan 1823 - d. 3 Aug 1900)
      • Wife of Barnabas Jones. "Mother". footstone: MHJ
  5. Jones, Sarah Ann Massey   (b. 11 Dec 1868 - d. 6 Aug 1959)
      • Wife of Ulrich Byron Jones. footstone: SAMJ
  6. Jones, Sarah Eulalia   (b. 16 Oct 1871 - d. 7 Feb 1950)
      • "In Loving Memory". A simple monument, footstone: SEJ
  7. Jones, Ulrich Byron   (b. 15 Oct 1858 - d. 2 Dec 1914)
      • footstone: UBJ
