084    MAPLEWOOD CEMETERY (1905 OR EARLIER)

Location - In Hillsborough Township in the Town of Hillsborough on the north side of West Corbin Street (Business Hwy US 70) between Cedar Grove Road and Maplewood Drive.

      Coordinates: 36d 04m 59.5s N; 79d 06m 15.9s W Click here for Google maps

Survey - The cemetery was surveyed on 16 Nov 1973 and rechecked on 29 May 1974. Milton Forsyth visited the cemetery on 27 February 2007 and provided photographs. PIN: 9864-99-1115. Another view of cemetery.

Description [1974] - The rectangular two-acre Cemetery ground was sold for $30 on May 13, 1905 by Chester D. Turner to Trustees Martin W. Whitted, Bedford C. Wilson, Henry Thompson, George W. Day, and others [OC Deed Book 59:146]. The unfenced cemetery (three sides are open) has suffered badly from erosion, and it is said to have been set on fire several times. A number of handsome old trees and shrub plantings make the cemetery attractive although it is criss-crossed by neighborhood paths. The earliest marked grave is that of Edward N. Faucette (d. 1888). It thus seems likely that a small Faucette family cemetery may have preceded Maplewood on this site. Buried here are George Craig (d. 1921) and Julia Craig (d. 1932), grandparents of famed jass musician Billy Strayhorn (William Thomas Strayhorn, 29 Nov 1915 - 31 May 1967, son of James and Lillian Craig Strayhorn).

      Graves, Marked [1974] - 101 marked, 90 others identified.

      Graves, Unmarked [1974] - 154.

Comments [2007] - A 1937 listing for the State Historical Records Survey had incorrectly combined into a list identified as "Hillsboro Cemetery - Colored" burials from several cemeteries. This list was the object of considerable study by the 1973 survey team. They were assisted by Mr. Earnest Price and Mr. Clyde W. Whitted, Sr. in an effort to place the burials in the correct cemetery. In the end, they were able to place all burials except 8, which were listed for separate entry.

In February 2007 Milton Forsyth discovered significant listing deficiencies while reviewing the original survey records for Cresmont Memorial Park (#082). This led him to also investigate the burials listed under the other cemeteries where entries had been the subject of the 1973 study of the 1937 list: #084 (Maplewood Cemetery), #227 (Hillsboro Cemetery - Black [Old]) and #228 (Unlocated Graves in Hillsborough - 1937 Survey).

Unfortunately, the typists did not use the correct drafts when preparing burial lists for these cemeteries. Only 57 burials were listed for Maplewood, whereas there were some 191 indicated on the list. Milton corrected the lists so they are now consistent with the intentions of the 1970s survey team. Some names were added. On the revised 2007 Maplewood listing, where the source is not from the readings of gravestones and markers in 1973 (or later) it is indicated as coming from the 1937 list or as having been identified by Mr. Price and Mr. Whitted, or some sources may be "undetermined." The source identified below as "OCDR" is Orange County Death Records.
