064    OLD ENO QUAKER BURYING GROUND (1759)

Location - In Hillsborough Township NE of Hillsborough off Hwy 57 at Mars Hill (a prominent geological edifice). On the north side of the highway about 0.15 mi. north of Strouds Creek Road, which is just north of the Mars Hill Baptist Church. The cemetery is listed on the Orange County GIS system as PIN 9876-10-0265.

      Coordinates: 36d 06m 50.0s N; 79d 05m 52.0s W Click here for Online Maps

Survey - M. C. Engstrom and Virginia C. Forrest surveyed this cemetery in November, 1959; it was rechecked by M. C. Engstrom and Beatrice B. Doak in October, 1973. Milton Forsyth visited and photographed the cemetery in February 2005 courtesy of Mrs. A. D. Freeland.

Graves, Marked - There were 57 marked graves, a number of stones only partially readable.

      Graves, Unmarked - None listed.

Status - The meeting house and cemetery property of 5 acres was rented to the Quaker Meeting on 15 Jul 1768 by Joseph Maddock for a five shilling payment plus 4 pence per year (see Orange County Deeds, Book 2, Page 565). The cemetery is surrounded by a rock wall and was in fair condition. In February 2005 the unattended cemetery had a number of fallen trees and tree limbs on it, had a heavy growth of young trees and bushes with some briars, and was covered in periwinkle, all of which suggested heavy vegetation cover in the summer. Also noted were a number of old red marker flags on graves, possibly from a past survey.

The Chapel Hill Friends Meeting established an Eno Cemetery Committee that conducted a study relating to the cemetery from 1999 thru 2001. The general purpose was to determine if it was feasible to restore and preserve it. Their conclusion was that it was not within the capability of the Meeting to do this, and that no other organization contacted was willing to accept the responsibility. Their report is recorded in the Orange County Register of Deeds office in Book 2483, Pages 248-257.
