052 NEW HOPE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY - OLD (1756)
Location - On new Rte 86 on the eastern side of the road opposite the Fifth Church and new cemetery, a short distance south of the intersection with SR #1723.
Coordinates: 36d 00m 52.0s N; 79d 04m 17.0s W Click here for Google maps
Survey - This cemetery was surveyed in 1975. Another view of the cemetery.
Graves, Marked - 89 inscribed stones, but more are found on various occasions by using probes and carefully assembling the fragments, for example, H. O. Blackwood's stone. Another rough stone is marked either 'H' Or 'W' in cursive script. The cemetery was abandoned in 1869.
Graves, Unmarked - 121 uninscribed stones and visible depressions, and perhaps others that cannot be identified. The total number of visible graves was 210.
Note - A note said: 'Surviving fragments of D. W. Craig's old stone now carries no remains of the earliest death date in Orange County. (see also the Alse Vicker's stone in St. Mary's Chapel Cemetery.) the meaning of this note is unclear.
Note - Revolutionary Soldiers: Up to 7 veterans of the Revolution are buried in this old cemetery. A monument to them is in the new cemetery.
Comment (2006) - In 2005-2006 Eagle Scout Eric Dodson of Orange County led a group of Scouts and church members in identifying and resetting grave markers in the cemetery. After restoring the markers, they landscaped the cemetery so it appears much as it did 200 years age. [Chapel Hill News, Sunday, 19 Mar 2006].
