      Location - Durham about 500 feet north of house at 1001 Chalk Level Road at Shaftsbury Drive.

      This abandoned cemetery (last burial, 1935) has 15 legibly marked graves. Canvassed by Doris Tilley (1981). This cemetery contains the grave of Washington Duke's first wife, Mary Caroline Clinton, and their son, Sidney T. Duke. It is in an area subject to development.

      Woods Family monument. Unknown as to whether it marks burials or is just a family monument for the Woods buried here. There are 12 to 15 depressions in the ground marking unknown burials.

      Development has approached within a few feet of this cemetery. Some of the homeowners have attempted some cleanup and protection.


  1. Chamblee, Alice A. Clinton   (b. 8 Jun 1830 - d. 20 Nov 1851)
      • Wife of John Ruffin Chamblee. Daughter of Jesse Clinton and Rachel Vickers Clinton.
  2. Clinton, Jesse   (b. Jan 1797 - d. 27 Apr 1847)
      • Husband of Rachel Vickers Clinton. Father of Martha L., Mary C., William Clinton and Alice A. Clinton. There were probably more children.
  3. Clinton, Rachel Vickers   (b. - d. abt 1868)
      • Wife of Jesse Clinton. Daughter of Riley Vickers Jr and Mary Cozart Vickers. Mother of Martha, Mary and William Clinton.
  4. Duke, Mary Caroline Clinton   (b. 28 Sep 1825 - d. Nov 1847)
      • 1st Wife of Washington Duke. Daughter of Rachel and Jesse Clinton. Mary Caroline inherited 73 acres and $300 cash from the estate of her father. Washington Duke used the $300 legacy to purchase 98 additional acres of the Clinton Estate on Ellerbee Creek. The cemetery stones pictured are all that is left after the cemetery was vandalized. These stone fragments are stored at Duke Homestead State Historic Site, Duke Homestead Road in Durham.
  5. Duke, Sidney T.   (b. 18 Dec 1844 - d. 10 Aug 1858)
      • Son of Washington Duke and Mary Clinton. Died of typhoid. The cemetery stones pictured are all that is left after being vandalized. These stone fragments are stored at Duke Homestead State Historic Site, Duke Homestead Road in Durham.

      • Son of J.G. and Stella Woods Latta. Stillborn; not named.
  7. Latta, Stella W. Woods   (b. 1 Apr 1895 - d. 14 Jun 1919)
      • Wife of J. G. Latta. Daughter of Jesse Harrison Woods and Martha Ella Pickett Woods.
  8. Pool, Joseph W.   (b. 5 Apr 1859 - d. 4 Nov 1935)
      • Husband of Carrie R. Woods Pool. Carrie is the daughter of William W. Woods and Martha Clinton. Son of James H. Pool and Sally Ann Stanly. Info. provided by Renee Woods Roderiques.
  9. Pool, Lula   (b. 22 Nov 1885 - d. 22 Jan 1886)
      • Daughter of Joseph W. Pool and Carrie R. Woods Pool.

      • Age 56. First Wife of Jesse Harrison Woods. Daughter of Elbert Washington Pickett and Martha Helon Rigsbee Pickett Cates. Mother of Stella Woods Latta. Martha was born in Orange County and married Levi Cates after Pickett died in the Civil War.
  15. Woods, Martha L. Clinton   (b. 1 Aug 1838 - d. 28 Feb 1913)
      • Wife of William Washington Woods. Daughter of Jesse Clinton and Rachel Vickers Clinton. Sister of Mary Caroline Clinton. Wife of William Washington Woods. Birth date on stone is difficult to read. Orange Co. marriage bonds support the date.
  16. Woods, Robert E.   (b. 25 Oct 1872 - d. 23 Nov 1906)
      • Footstone only. Son of William Washington Woods and Martha Clinton Woods.
  17. Woods, William Washington   (b. 12 Feb 1835 - d. 20 Mar 1918)
      • Son of Harrison Woods and Patsey Cardin Woods. Husband of Martha Clinton Woods.
