In Spring 1983, Kathy and Terry Jones recorded 21 grave markers. Reported in Kathy Brooks Jones Buffalo Creek Chronicles, Vol. I, 1984, page 44. There is a stone memorial at cemetery which reads:

"May 27, 1925. 53 men died in Farmville Coal Mine explosion 300 yards southeast of cemetery. The victims buried in this cemetery are: Claude D. Johnson, Charlie Wood, Henry Grady Hall, W.E. Byerly, W. Hollis Richardson."

Edgar Taylor, descendant of Thomas Farish, made CCHA aware that several older burials were on the property prior to its purchase by the Deep River Mining and Transportation Company. According to Chatham County deed AH/460, Thomas Farish sold his plantation to Lemuel Williams of Massachusetts, on 23 Dec 1850. In that deed he reserved "the burial place of old Mr. Burns, Dr. Watson and the children of the said Farish, also the ground upon which the Free School house is located." The description of the property suggests that Mr. Burns and Dr. Watson had been neighbors of Thomas Farish. Other family records, recorded in John Frederick Dorman's The Farish Family of Virginia and Its Forbears suggest that two children of Thomas and Frances Banks Farish who died before the plantation was sold in December 1850 were Polly, born 26 September 1806 "died young," and Andrew Jackson Farish died 29 April 1828. (See Dorman, note 24, pg. 132.) These burials are believed to be marked by now-illegible markers, which were photographed by Mr. Taylor in 1993. link to photo.
