In September 1989 and November 1990, Faye Moore recorded 262 legible grave markers and 11 illegible markers. In February 1998, Will and Audrey Heiser, accompanied by Robert Jourdan, recorded 25 additional grave markers. Julie King-Mc Daniel photographed all of the stones in the cemetery and recorded 50 additional grave markers in April 2010. She provided a layout sketch showing all of the burial locations. She and Berta Faye King corrected and updated records and added information on family relationships from church records. Refer to the photographs to determine what information is actually shown on the gravestone. King-McDaniel updated the survey and added several photos in August 2023.

In 2018, Forest Hazel arranged for a ground penetrating radar survey to be done on the section of the Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery where church history suggested that coal mine accident victims were buried. The survey was conducted in late January 2018 of a small section of the eastern portion of the cemetery, including a section that is marked with four boundary markers. The boundary markers were placed in late 1940s and replaced many field stones that were originally there to mark the graves, according to church members.

The survey indicated that there are 34 individual graves located in the area that was surveyed. Fifteen have associated markers and 19 are unmarked. There is also an area within that boundary that appears to be a collection of many individual graves placed close together. Because it does not appear that one excavation was used for all of the individuals in this area, it is not technically considered a "mass grave. It does appear that the multiple graves in this area were interred within a short period of time, and there is a large area of disturbed soil, suggesting that many of the grave shafts may have been open at the same time.

Forest Hazel and Julie King-McDaniel have conducted research into the identities of those buried in the boundary area. Their research suggests that more than likely these burials were the victims of accidents that occurred in coal mines in the 1890's. They conclude that the burials were not victims of the Coal Glenn disaster. Death certificates for the 53 victims of the 27 May 1925 disaster indicate only one burial in Bethany Baptist cemetery - Archie F. Holland - whose stone is found not in the walled area but in the larger cemetery.

Forest Hazel's research on the major disasters at the Deep River mines, suggests that these burials were mainly from the 1895 Cumnock mine explosion which killed at least 43 men, many of them foreigners with no local family. There may have been others buried in this location from time to time who were not from the area and whose families could not be contacted.

There are several individuals who worked and/or died in the mines and are buried at Bethany with marked stones: Joe Edd Glass, Caleb Hargraves, Archie Holland, Atlas Andrews, Leonard Ascough, William Hill, and William Henry Holshouser.

After the survey results were revealed, the church decided to place a memorial marker in the area marked by the four boundary markers. The marker was paid for by private donations and was put in place in October 2018.
