Between 1992 and 1995, Martha Hope Smith recorded 315 grave markers and reported at least 12 field stones or sunken areas for other grave locations. On 12 February 1996, Will M. Heiser visited the cemetery. In April 2001, Jane Pyle recorded 18 grave markers. Additional burial records were added in September 2010, when Guy Arnold photographed all of the markers in the cemetery. Exterior entrance to church. View of the church.

This record contains burial information from grave markers, the St. Bartholomew Parish register, and other sources. Please consult the photographs to confirm information actually provided on the grave markers. In some cases, information from the parish register has been noted.

The Church of England was the official church of the colony of North Carolina, so the bill ratified in 1771 that formed Chatham County concurrently formed St. Bartholomew's Parish. Chatham County was the summer residence for a number of Episcopalian families from the Wilmington area - including the Hills, Moores, Waddells, and Watters. Many of these families had established permanent homes in the county by the 1820s.

The earliest recorded services in the parish were held in 1820, probably at the Chatham Courthouse. In 1831 Frederick J. Hill and Nathaniel Hill commissioned local builders Martin and Wesley Hanks to build a house of worship on lot number 1 on the Pittsboro town plan. The cornerstone for St Bartholomew's Church was laid in 1832. A year later, Bishop Ives consecrated the sanctuary, in which the congregation still worships. The structure was originally frame, but was veneered in brick in 1937. The sanctuary is said to be one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in North Carolina. A marker recognizing the contributions of the Hill family to the Parish stands near the entrance to the sanctuary.

Early parishioners at St. Bartholomew's consisted primarily of Episcopalian families who had come to Pittsboro from the lower Cape Fear and the African-Americans who served them as slaves. After the Civil War, a separate mission for "the colored people in Pittsboro" was established. St. James Mission was activated in 1883 and existed until 1968 when membership declined and the mission was decommissioned. At that time, many of the families who attended St. James joined St. Bartholomew's.

St. Bartholomew's large graveyard surrounds the 1833 sanctuary. This well-maintained burial ground is beautified by graceful trees and plantings. Grave markers range from elaborate to simple fieldstones. A number of grave markers are signed by Fayetteville stonecutter, George Lauder, who also carved the baptismal font for the sanctuary. The work of several other stonecutters, including Gaddes, Baltimore; Charles Goodwin, Raleigh; D. Ritter, New Haven; Finney, Philadelphia; and W.C. Milligan, Wilmington, are also represented.

The parish hall was added to the church in 1954, covering a portion of the old church yard that contained family plots for the Jones, Moore, Taylor and Roberts families, among others. Some of the tombstones were relocated and the rumor persists that others remain under the church addition.

Many persons of historical significance are buried here. Interesting tidbits about many of them can be found in Jane Pyle's 2003 booklet, "St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Pittsboro NC: Map and Index of the Church Cemetery with Selected Biographical Sketches." Copies of that publication are available from the church: St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 204 W Salisbury St., Pittsboro, NC 27312-9483; (919) 542-5679, http://www.saint-barts.org.

The Chatham County Historical Association would like to thank Martha Hope Smith and Jane Pyle for their meticulous transcription and organization of the parish records on burials, and Guy Arnold for his photographs of the gravestones.
