034    HAWFIELDS (old)

Location - Hawfields Presbyterian Church and Cemetery were originally located several miles northeast of where the Church stands today.

Survey from the notes of Durward T. Stokes recorded with Mr. Ben M Rogers of Graham, NC on May 3, 1959.

The first Church burned and was rebuilt at the present location. The first cemetery was neglected for many years and even plowed into at one time. Recently the Hawfields Church, under the leadership of N N Fleming, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, has taken over the upkeep of this spot and cleaned it up. A stone marker was placed there in 1925. There is almost nothing there today to identify this spot as a cemetery except sunken places indicating graves, broken and scattered rock, and a few fragments of inscriptions. This was a large cemetery for it's day and many people are evidently buried here.
