      Location - on Hwy 119 about five miles north of the town of Mebane in northern Alamance County. Where SR-1910 and SR-1912 intersect with highway 119.

      This survey was conducted with data from the book "Kara Graham and Sophie S. Martin, Alamance County, North Carolina Cemetery Records of Cross Roads Church, Stoney Creek Church, Union Ridge Church. (Chapel Hill, NC: Authors, 1974)." and was updated by Gary Thompson to include recent burials through March 10, 2006.

      There is a section of the cemetery with many unengraved stones which is believed to be a slave section. View of the church. Lots of photographs by Grant Pinnix in February 2008.

      From the survey book:
      "The church is thought to have been organized about 1783, as an outgrowth of Hawfields Church. Records prior to 1820 were destroyed by fire, ..."

      Presbyterianism has a very long and deep tradition in this area of the country, and Cross Roads has played a particularly important role in that history. In 1801, the national movement known as the Second Great Awakening came to the southeast via this congregation when a young man from Tennessee attending Sunday worship stood up just before the service ended and shouted, "Stand still and see the salvation/glory of God." The stunned congregation remained at church all afternoon, and from that day on a period of renewal began to take root and spread to congregations throughout the immediate area and beyond.

      In the 1970's Cross Roads again fell under the national spotlight when Alex Haley discovered that one of his relatives, the daughter of a former slave, was still living in the community around the church. The shared history between Haley's ancestors and those of Cross Roads members brought the author to the church and the community for a special service of remembrance.
